From power to energy consumption
The power tells you how fast an appliance uses energy. The energy consumption also depends on how long it is in use. 1 kWh equals 1,000 W for 1 hour.
The calculation assumes that the power is constant throughout the period. The stated power of an appliance therefore does not necessarily describe the actual consumption if the appliance changes power or switches on and off. You can enter the power in W or kW and the time in hours or minutes.
Calculate the cost with your electricity price
The electricity cost is found by multiplying the energy consumption by the price per kWh. Use your total price per kWh for the period you are calculating. Fixed subscriptions are not included in the result.
If your total price per kWh is missing, the cost is unknown. The energy consumption can still be calculated from power and time. The price in the example below is the page's calculation example and should not be taken as your current electricity price.
Example of consumption and cost
2,000 W for 3 hours gives 2,000 × 3 = 6,000 Wh. Converted, that is 6,000 / 1,000 = 6 kWh. With the example price of 2.50 per kWh, the cost is 6 × 2.50 = 15.
