Choose an amount with or without VAT
Before you calculate, you need to know whether your amount already includes VAT. Choose to add VAT when you have the amount without VAT. Choose to remove VAT when you have the total amount with VAT and want to find the amount before VAT.
You enter the VAT rate yourself. Use the rate that applies to the specific purchase or invoice; rates differ between countries and between goods and services. The result shows both amounts and the difference between them, so the VAT amount is not mistaken for the total price.
How to add and remove VAT
The amount with VAT is the amount without VAT multiplied by 1 + the VAT rate divided by 100. If you have the amount with VAT, divide it by the same number instead. The VAT amount is the difference between the amount with and without VAT.
When VAT is removed from a price, you therefore cannot simply subtract the VAT rate's percentage of the final price. The rate is calculated on the amount without VAT, and that is the starting point the division finds its way back to.
Example with 25% VAT
In this example, the amount without VAT is 800, and the VAT rate is 25%. The factor is 1 + 25 / 100 = 1.25. The amount with VAT is 800 × 1.25 = 1,000. The VAT amount is 1,000 − 800 = 200. The reverse calculation gives 1,000 / 1.25 = 800 without VAT.
