Currency exchange fee calculator: How much currency do you get?
An exchange offer can include both a special customer rate and a fixed fee. That is why the fee alone does not tell you what the exchange costs. The calculator shows how much foreign currency you receive for a given budget in your own currency.

Worked example
- Offers: One offer
- Amount in your currency: 10,000.00 GBP
- Reference rate (your currency per unit): 7.46
- Rate markup: 1.5 %
- Fixed fee: 20.00 GBP
Result
Customer rate (per unit)
7.5719
Currency received
1,318.0311
Effective price per unit
7.5871
Extra cost
167 GBP
Working
- customer rate = q × (1 + s/100)
7.46 × (1 + 1.5/100) = 7.5719 - currency received = (amount − fee) / customer rate
(10,000.00 GBP − 20.00 GBP) / 7.5719 = 1,318.0311 - effective price = amount / currency received
10,000.00 GBP / 1,318.0311 = 7.5871 - extra cost = amount − currency received × q
10,000.00 GBP − 1,318.0311 × 7.46 = 167.49 GBP
Enter the amount, reference rate, percentage rate markup and fixed fee. You can compare two offers with the same amount and reference rate.
How the markup and fee are included
Here the reference rate is given in your currency per unit of foreign currency. Customer rate = reference rate × (1 + rate markup). A positive markup makes the foreign currency more expensive to buy.
The fixed fee is first deducted from your budget. The rest is divided by the customer rate. The result is the currency you receive.
Example with a budget of 10,000
Assume a reference rate of 7.46 per EUR, a rate markup of 1.5% and a fixed fee of 20. The customer rate is 7.5719 per EUR, and 9,980 is left for the exchange itself.
You therefore receive about 1,318.03 EUR. The example shows why both the rate and the fee must be known before two offers can be compared.
A rate markup is not always a percentage fee
A markup on the exchange rate is calculated differently from a percentage fee deducted from your budget. Use the method the provider actually describes. If the cost is already built into the customer rate you enter, it should not be added again.
The calculator applies to buying foreign currency with your own currency. If you only want to convert an amount without costs, you can use an ordinary currency converter.
