Gravel calculator: How much sand and gravel should you order?
A layer of gravel is calculated from area and thickness. When ordering, you must also consider compaction, delivery method and the weight of the material. Here you can combine several layers and see the quantities in both cubic meters and approximate tons.
Worked example
- Area: 20 m²
- Layer 1: Finished thickness 15 cm · Allowance for loose delivery 25 % · Loose density 1.6 t/m³ · Bulk bag 1 m³
Finished layer
3 m³
Loose volume 3.75 m³
| Layer | Finished | Loose | Weight | Bulk bags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Layer 1 | 3 m³ | 3.75 m³ | 6 t | 4 |
The weight is indicative and based on the loose volume and the supplier's density.
Finished layer and delivered material
Enter the area and the desired finished layer thickness. Enter the density of the material from the supplier, and check whether it applies to loose or compacted material. If the supplier states an allowance from finished layer to loose delivery, it must be used at the right step.
Compaction and density are not the same. A density for loose material cannot simply be used as the density for a finished compacted layer. The calculator shows which volume the weight is based on.
How to prepare an order
Calculate each layer separately
Sub-base, crushed aggregate base and bedding sand can have different thicknesses and properties. Use the layers chosen for your project. The calculator does not determine the necessary construction from the area alone.
Example of volume
An area of 20 m² with a 15 cm layer gives 3 m³ of finished layer. The order quantity can be different, depending on the material and the supplier's information about compaction.
Check freight, access and the possibility of unloading when you compare prices. If you collect the material yourself, the weight is also important. Remember that the moisture of the actual material can change the actual weight.
