Tile calculator: Calculate tiles, whole boxes and waste

When you buy tiles, you normally need more than the exact net area. Cutting, laying pattern and whole boxes affect the order. The calculator keeps those parts separate, so you can see where the quantity comes from.

Enter the surface dimensions and the box coverage

Start with the surfaces to be covered. Walls and floor are entered separately if both are included. Subtract door and window openings from the wall area, and use the coverage per box stated on the product.

A waste allowance is an assumption about the project. Many corners or a special pattern can require more cutting than a simple rectangular surface. The result is an area estimate, not a laying plan.

Guide to buying tiles

Use the stated coverage of the box

A box can contain a certain number of tiles and a stated area. Use the information from the product you want to buy, and check how joints are included in the manufacturer's figure.

Example with whole boxes

A net area of 10 m² and a chosen waste allowance of 10 percent give 11 m². If a box covers 1.2 m², you need to buy ten boxes. The purchase is 12 m², and the difference is shown as leftover.

Also consider whether you want extra tiles for a later repair. That reserve should be visible as a separate choice. The calculator does not decide the substrate, waterproofing or floor slope; those matters must be settled in the project itself before the tiles are installed.
