Worked example
- Calculate: Dividend yield
- Number of shares: 100
- Annual dividend per share: 8.00 EUR
- Current price: 200.00 EUR
Result
Annual dividend
800 EUR
Dividend yield
4 %
Monthly average
67 EUR
Working
- annual dividend = q × d
100 × 8.00 EUR = 800.00 EUR - dividend yield = 100 × d / P
100 × 8.00 EUR / 200.00 EUR = 4 % - monthly average = q × d / 12
100 × 8.00 EUR / 12 = 66.67 EUR
If your purchase price differs from the current price, you can also see the dividend relative to the amount you paid yourself.
How to calculate the dividend
Annual dividend = number of shares × annual dividend per share. The dividend yield is the dividend per share divided by the current share price, multiplied by 100.
Use the same period for all dividend payments. A company may pay several times a year, for example; then the year's payments must be added together.
Example: 100 shares with a dividend of 8
At a share price of 200 and an annual dividend of 8, the dividend yield is 4%. If you own 100 shares, you receive 800 before tax.
If you bought the shares at 160, the dividend equals 5% of your own purchase price. The current dividend yield is still 4%.
Dividends are only part of the return
A high dividend percentage can be due to a large dividend, a low share price or both. On its own, it does not tell you how good the investment has been. A fall in price can exceed the dividends received.
A monthly average is not a payment schedule either. The company's actual payments may fall at other times, and future dividends may change. If you want to include the price development, you can use the total stock return calculator.
