Worked example
- Deposit: End of the month
- Starting amount: 100,000.00 EUR
- Deposit per month: 1,000.00 EUR
- Annual return: 7 %
- Term: 20 years
Result
Final amount
894,505 EUR
Total paid in
340,000 EUR
Return
554,505 EUR
Working
- 20 years = 240 months
- i = (1 + r/100)^(1/12) − 1
(1 + 7/100)^(1/12) − 1 = 0.005654 - S = K × (1 + i)^N + M × ((1 + i)^N − 1) / i
100,000.00 EUR × (1 + 0.005654)^240 + 1,000.00 EUR × ((1 + 0.005654)^240 − 1) / 0.005654 = 894,504.82 EUR - paid in = K + M × N
100,000.00 EUR + 1,000.00 EUR × 240 = 340,000.00 EUR - return = S − paid in
894,504.82 EUR − 340,000.00 EUR = 554,504.82 EUR
You can also start from zero. The result splits the final amount into your own deposits and calculated return, so the two parts are not mixed up.
How the monthly savings are included
Each deposit earns a return for the time it is invested. The money from the first month therefore has longer to grow than the money from the last month.
The calculator converts the effective annual return to a monthly rate with the formula monthly return = (1 + annual return)^(1/12) − 1. The conversion ensures that the 12 months together equal the annual percentage you have chosen.
Example with 1,000 per month
If you start with 100,000 and deposit 1,000 at the end of each month for 20 years, you have paid in 340,000 yourself. With an assumed annual return of 7%, the final value is about 894,505 before tax and costs.
Deposit at the start or the end of the month
If you choose the start of the month, each deposit gets one extra month of return. With a positive return, that gives a higher final value than a deposit at the end of the month.
A constant return is a scenario. A real investment does not follow a smooth curve, and the order of price rises and falls affects regular savings. If you have a specific target amount, the monthly deposit calculator can work backward from the goal.
