Calculate the amount of insulation for the attic

First find the area of the surface you want to insulate. Then use the layer thickness to calculate the geometric volume of the insulation.

Start with the surface to be insulated

The attic area is not necessarily the same as the floor area of the home. Measure the actual surface to be insulated, and use the area calculator as the first step. If the surface is rectangular, you need to know its length and width.

A sloping roof surface is larger than the floor below it. The floor area therefore cannot simply be used as the area for insulation along a sloping surface. With several separate surfaces, measure and calculate each surface before adding the areas together.

Use the layer thickness to find the volume

When the area is known, the volume is calculated by multiplying the area by the layer thickness. You choose the thickness yourself based on your project. It depends on the material and the insulation already in the attic.

The calculator does not set a recommended thickness. If the information needed to choose it is missing, the relevant layer thickness is unknown. The result shows the quantity as a geometric volume and can be used as the basis for further material calculations.

From volume to purchase

How much insulation you need to buy depends on the product's density, pack size, compression and waste. Use the product details when converting the volume into a purchase quantity. Without the necessary details, the number of packs or bags is unknown.
