Worked example
- Area: 1,000 ft²
- Layer thickness: 10 in
Result
Volume
833.3333 ft³
Working
- 10 in = 0.8333 ft
- V = A × h
1,000 ft² × 0.8333 ft = 833.3333 ft³
From insulated area to volume
The calculator is used when you already know the area and the desired layer thickness. The volume is found by multiplying the area by the thickness. That gives the space the insulation layer takes up geometrically.
The area can be entered in cm² or m² (or in², ft² or yd²), while the thickness can be given in mm, cm or m (or inches, feet or yards). Choose the unit your measurements are given in. The calculator does not choose an insulation material or a suitable thickness for the construction.
Example with 120 m² and 200 mm
The area is 120 m², and the layer thickness is 200 mm. First the thickness is converted: 200 / 1,000 = 0.2 m. The volume is 120 × 0.2 = 24 m³. Converted to liters, that is 24 × 1,000 = 24,000 liters.
The result is the volume of the chosen layer. No assumed waste percentage or product-specific correction has been added in this example.
What to buy depends on the insulation product
The product's density, pack size, compression and waste affect the quantity you need to buy. A calculated volume alone therefore cannot tell you the number of packs or the weight of the material. If the necessary product details are missing, the purchase quantity is unknown. Use the details of the specific material for the further conversion.
