Worked example
- Wall area: 500 ft²
- Openings (doors and windows): 50 ft²
- Number of coats: 2
- Coverage: 350 ft²/US gal
Result
Paintable area
450 ft²
Paint
2.5714 US gal
Working
- paintable = wall area − openings
500 ft² − 50 ft² = 450 ft² - paint = paintable × coats / coverage
450 ft² × 2 / 350 ft²/US gal = 2.5714 US gal
Find the area to be painted
Start with the total wall area. Then enter the area of the doors and windows that will not be painted. The calculator subtracts the openings, so only the paintable area is used.
The number of coats is entered separately. The calculator uses the number you choose and does not decide how many coats the job requires. Make sure the wall area and the openings describe the same walls, so openings are not subtracted twice.
Use the stated coverage of the paint
Coverage is given in m² per liter and must be taken from the paint label. The calculation multiplies the paintable area by the number of coats and divides by the coverage.
If the coverage is missing, the amount of paint is unknown. The result gives liters based on your inputs and does not say which can sizes to buy. The specific paint and the condition of the surface determine how well the calculated consumption fits the job.
Example of the amount of paint
The wall area is 50 m², and the openings make up 5 m². The paintable area is 50 − 5 = 45 m². With 2 coats, the area to be covered with paint is 45 × 2 = 90 m². With a coverage of 8 m² per liter, the amount is 90 / 8 = 11.25 liters.
