Sealant calculator: How many cartridges should you buy?
The length of the joint alone does not tell you how much sealant is needed. Width, depth and cross-section determine the volume. The calculator converts your measurements to milliliters and whole cartridges.
Worked example
- Cartridge: 10.1442 fl oz
- Joint 1: Length 32.8084 ft · Width 0.3937 in · Depth 0.1969 in · Profile Rectangle
Cartridges
2
16.907 fl oz of sealant · with allowance 16.907 fl oz
Sealant in cartridges. Cement-based tile grout requires a different method.
Choose the right joint profile
A rectangular joint contains more material than a right triangle with the same width and depth. So choose the profile that matches the planned work, and enter the actual cartridge volume of the product.
The joint width should not automatically be used as the joint depth. The relevant geometry and any backer rod depend on the product and the task. Use the manufacturer's instructions to set the dimensions before you calculate the purchase.
Guide to consumption and ordering
Measure several runs separately
Windows, joints and corners can have different joint dimensions. Calculate them separately and add up the quantities if the same product is to be used. Add a visible allowance for handling and leftovers.
Example with a rectangular joint
A joint of 10 meters with a width of 10 mm and a depth of 5 mm has a calculated volume of 500 ml. With 300 ml cartridges, two cartridges are needed without further allowance. The same length with a right-triangle profile gives half the geometric volume.
The result tells you the quantity in the chosen model. It does not decide whether the sealant suits the substrate, movement or exposure to water. Cement-based tile grout requires a different method than sealant in cartridges. So check the product's use and consumption information before you order the material.
